Coloring with Dye Sticks – Wendy Ray

Have you ever wanted to color on fabric, but crayons, colored pencils, markers and paints just haven’t given you the results you were looking for? Then Dye Sticks might be the answer. Dye sticks are a dye pigmented stick that resemble Artist Pastels. The colors can be mixed/ blended and shaded on fabric or blended before being applied to fabric so you can mix the colors you want. The colors become permanent after they are heat set. Once you learn the techniques, projects can be easily taken anywhere. There’s not a lot of fuss, mess or clean up required. Kit includes; Dye Sticks, printed Millifiori Hexagon panel, and blending stumps – $20.00  Hexagon is 9 ¾” x 11 ¼ ” which can be bound and used as a small table topper, etc.

Sashiko stitching/Mending is a current rage among the DIY’s with new books coming out the past fall and spring. Sashiko stitching is one of Wendy’s obsessions and has been for 20+ years. You will learn some Sashiko history, along with the best type of needles and thread to use and the proper way to hold the needle when stitching. You will learn the traditional Sashiko way to start and end your stitching. You will be able to use the techniques learned for Big Stitch Quilting and/or Decorative Mending. Kit includes; 2 printed coasters, fabric, Sashiko thread, Sashiko needle, and a Sashiko thimble. $10.00  Each coaster finishes at 4 ½” x 4 ½”.

Interlocking chevrons make this quilt look difficult, but the design is made easy by using flying geese. The students will be able to master making flying geese, which they will then be able to use throughout their quilting years. Students will be required to have pieces cut out before class. Pieces will be provided for students to practice on before sewing on their chosen fabrics.  Rulers and pattern can be purchased from the instructor.

A “Mandala” is a square composition containing 4 circles around a center point. This geometric quilt balances 2 fundamental units in a unique circular design. In this class the students will be introduced to the technique developed by Deb Tucker from Studio 180 Design. Deb’s technique has you create an over sized unit and then, using her tools, trim the unit down to a precise unit that will fit together better and give you a better result in your quilted items. Students will learn to make 4 different units with the Tucker Trimmer 1 tool and then learn to make crisp, clean flying geese in a quick manner with the Wing Clipper tool. They come in many sizes with many uses – gift bags, lunch sacks, knitting/sewing bag, purses, shopping bags, etc. – and are quick and easy to make.   I’ll show you how to make a reversible Bento Bag with a handle.   Many fabrics from your stash will work well.

Basket Case is a trick for the eye with strips that seem to weave in and out of each other. Uses jelly roll pre-cut strips or yardage. Let Wendy guide you as she shares with you many helpful tips from her Pineapple Friends; Nancy, Lynda, Eleanor and Jodi. You have the choice to make either the table runner or a set of four place mats. This is a technique class. You will learn to piece and sew the pineapple block without needing any special pineapple tools, rulers, or printed foundations. You will be learning how to use the regular rulers you already have. After class you will be able to make pineapple blocks that have fussy cut centers, different sized rounds, be able to size your blocks to your liking, and piece any size of a quilt. Pattern required – $8.00. Skill level – advanced beginner, intermediate.              Place mats 13”x 17” each, table runner 17”x 40”.
